ARTIST BIO
Xiaoxing Cao(“Shyow-shing Tsow”) is from Zhejiang Province, in eastern China. She got her Bachelor and Master’s degree in biology and environmental microbiology department in Xiamen University, China. And then she moved to Hong Kong and worked for Hong Kong Science and Technology University as a visiting scholar.
Traditional mastery of painting in China involves many different skills, including not only painting techniques, but also calligraphy, chop-carving, and poetry writing. Like many Chinese painters, Xiaoxing began learning Chinese calligraphy in art school when she was eight years old, and she received many awards and honors for her work. She loves traveling, loves all kinds of beautiful things and views, so she tries to use her way to record and began learning photography when she in the college. In 2011, Xiaoxing moved to New Haven, United states, she found that the Chinese painting was a good way helped her to explain her feelings and emotions about the beauty and arts. So she again focuses on Chinese painting and began to teach herself various techniques and styles.
“The inspiration for my paintings comes from my love of flowers and landscapes, and my desire to express the joy they bring me. I use traditional Chinese methods in brush movements and calligraphy, and traditional materials, along with stronger, brighter colors which are less traditional, to evoke a spirit of youthfulness and tranquility in my work.”
Xiaoxing is the leader of the Yale Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Group (YCPCG) Members come from different countries and varying artistic backgrounds, they are Yale spouses, students and staffs, who all come together to share a similar love and interest in further developing skills in Chinese art. The group has been invited to give four art exhibitions and will have the fifth group exhibition soon this September in Yale International Center, 421 Temple Street, New Haven. Xiaoxing also currently teaches adult calligraphy class and kids Chinese culture club in the New Haven Chinese Language School , summer camp and Chinese painting and calligraphy class of South Connecticut Chinese School , to share her culture and love of art with others.
